This course will teach the basics of web design and how websites work. You will be learning "client side" web design. This allows for the creation of websites that display information to the user. Websites that receive information from users and display pages based on the user's input requre "server side" development and are the subject a different course (Internet for Business).
We will be using the following software from Macromedia: Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8 and Fireworks 8. These products are installed on the computers in the labs in 215Lex and in our classroom - room 312 in 215Lex. You will need these software products to do your HW. The other software we will be using is notepad and the FileZilla FTP client. Notepad is a program that comes for free with Microsoft Windows. The FileZilla FTP client software can be downloaded for free from: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558.
At the beginning of the semester every student will register for a website hosting account with godaddy.com. Your HW and your term project must be uploaded to your website hosting account.
You will be required to follow the lessons in the "Web Collection Revealed" book on your own for HW. Most of class time will be spent on theory and understanding the underlying concepts rather than on working with the Macromedia software.
Over the course of the term you will be creating a website. The website can be about anything you like (within reason). You will be adding features to your website as we learn about them in class. The website will be graded twice over the semester. Each grade counts equally. You will be graded on appearance/aesthetics, functionality and use of the topics that we covered in class.
You are permitted up to 3 absences. If you have more than 3 absenses then you MUST have a very good excuse for ALL of your absenses or else your grade may suffer.
We will cover some information in class that is not in the book. If you miss a class, make sure to get the notes from someone who was there.
